I love this idea, and I love that pen-palling inspired it!

  • http://www.hecktictravels.com Dalene

Awesome idea Candice!!! Really love it. :)

  • http://confrontinglove.com Carlo Alcos

You’re awesome Candice! I love this idea. I got a new pen pal a couple years back and we’ve exchanged a few letters…my intention is to also do more writing by hand…I’ve already bought a brand spanking new notebook and pen. I used to love pen shopping.

  • http://michelleschusterman.com Michelle Schusterman

This is so cool!!! Can’t wait to see more.

I have to say I’m insanely jealous of your handwriting. Mine was never all that great, even when I used to write by hand a lot, and now it’s just utter chicken scratch.

  • http://www.baconismagic.ca ayngelina

    I love it!

I have kept a journal since I was 5, although lately I haven’t been writing as much because the blog takes up all my time :(

I don’t mind the handwriting format, I would read it.

  • http://refrigeratormagnate.wordpress.com/ SpilledInkGuy

    Very, very cool idea, Candice!
Well worth any potential paper cuts, I’d say!
(Are those scratch and sniff markers? In my mind they totally are. Seems raspberryish.)
    :)

  • http://www.solofemaletraveler.com Sabina

Candice, I LOVE THIS!!! You are so creative. I will be glued to your website for the next journal entries, sketches and other creative insight :)

  • http://mikesowden.org/feveredmutterings Mikeachim

Actually, it’s now even easier to steal your shit. Right click, “save image as….”.

    ….

What do you mean I’m a ‘jerk’?

This is, by the way, fabulous. Bugger SEO. This is creatively smart. And people will love you for it. And it’s more intimate, and expressive, and fun, and gorgeous. And as I ranted tediously on another website recently, longhand changes the way you think and therefore what you write. (Personally, I find I write better with a pen in my hand). (Go back 50 years and that last sentence would make NO SENSE AT ALL. I love the way technology is making an idiot of our language).

    Do this.

Do this until your nib falls off.

  • http://lifechangingyear.com Tracey

Love it! I would certainly read it like this!!! And you gave me a good laugh too!!

  • http://teachergirlblogs.com Teacher Girl

Amazing! I am in love with this format and with the way you have presented yourself. I say, bravo! Keep doing this. It is real and incredible and people will realize that!

  • http://www.carolineinthecityblog.com Caroline in the City

Love this! I’ve written in my journal the whole time I’ve been in Australia, which is no easy feat! I’m on journal #3.

  • http://notesplusultra.wordpress.com/ James

I love it Candice, this is such a creative idea!

I think we often lose sight of the “magic” of simply doing things by hand. Sometimes the most profound pieces are not long articles but short tidbits, little anecdotes and maybe a spur-of-the-moment drawing. There was once a time when I recorded bits and pieces of my summer travels in a sketchbook; back in 2002 I did a drawing of my grandparents’ house and another one of downtown Montreal. Nine years on, both those images hold a lot of sentimental value. I might just get around to posting them at some point… (no, I am not trying to steal your ideas ;) )

  • http://jackietravels.com Jackie D

Your handwriting is SO NEAT. I’ve started something like this for the journal I plan to bring on my next trip in January, but this is way better so maybe I’ll just sit and stare at yours instead of working on mine. Can’t wait to see more!

  • http://www.50plusandontherun.com NLM

    Very cool!

  • http://seattlestravels.com Seattle Dredge

Haha! I like the very last part :]
And I love this, what an awesome idea. I’d never be brave enough to display my travel journal.. plus my hand writing looks like chicken scratch compared to this, haha.

  • http://trustmaggie.wordpress.com/ maggie

I already told you what I think. . . but I tell you again! I loves it! Loves it lots :) You have such nice handwritting :) And it does feel more intimate and cozy and letter like. And just more personal than usual type face.
And by da jaysus it makes me want to get back into letter writting. Or at least postcrossing. . .
I write a lot in my files at work. . . I find it kind of soothing to write things out. And it is very helpful when the client comes back months later and I don’t remember a thing ;P

  • http://www.travelerahoy.com Alouise

This is a great idea. It seem kinda ironic but writing on paper sometimes makes me feel more connected with my writing than writing online does. And I totally hear you on the stationery stores. There’s one in my city, and I it takes a lot of willpower for me not to empty my back account there.

  • http://world-flavor.com Rachel

Totally great idea! I love handwritten stuff and you have nice handwriting (pretty important, for this sort of project). It will be like getting a postcard or letter when looking at your blog! Excellent.

  • http://www.nomadsontheroad.com Mike C

Pure awesomeness – wicked cool idea. Bring back letter writing.

  • http://www.thesmartgirlstravelguide.com Mags

Aww, this is truly lovely. Such a romantic way to share your travel stories. And of course, people can’t steal your shit!

    Love it :)

  • http://www.thetravelhack.com Monica

I absolutely love this. I kept a journal when I was a kid and the whole time I was travelling. I still love to flick through my old journals where I find it so much easier to write – the odd doodle and splash of colour brightens things up too. Love it! :)

  • http://roymarvelous.com Roy Marvelous

Love it Candice. It’s so easy to get sucked into the whole SEO and marketing side of blogging that people forget the most important part – story-telling and creativity.

    Roy

    p.s. who says I can’t steal your shit ;)

  • http://www.inpursuitofhappiness.net Miss Britt

    What a beautiful idea.

Your PS still has me laughing… love it! This is a brilliant idea :)

  • http://www.WanderingEducators.com wandering educators

brava!! i LOVE it. i, too, have a zillion pens. and always lean on the fountain pens (they make me happy) for important letters.

  • http://angelinem.wordpress.com Angeline

I love this! I just found a hand written journal that I was keeping about my garden a few years ago. Somehow or another I think I was more inspired then, writing by hand. And I think you’re right….the internet does eat up creativity, and a lot of time!

  • http://www.tumblr.com/vitalwaves Megan MacLeod (@megpie_)

Awesome idea. I think there is something so honest about writing with a pen and paper.. your true thoughts just seem to flow out and I believe its when real clarity happens. I feel inspired to get some of my journal entries onto the internet now too!

  • http://volunteercapitalcentre.blogspot.com Zablon Mukuba

its very original i will give you that. great idea, now to see how many people will steal it

  • http://www.ordinarytraveler.com Christy @ Ordinary Traveler

Your handwriting is WAY better than mine! I think I would enjoy hand writing things if I could actually make out the words later. Typing has made my handwriting suck, that’s for sure. Great idea, though! I love it. And I love that you still have your diaries from when you were a kid.

  • http://www.ouroyster.com/home Jade Johnston – OurOyster.com

Wow what an awesome idea! I love the PS at the end! haha

Holy fishballs guys, wasn’t expecting such awesome support! Thanks to you all! I really appreciate it. :) I still have a few issues to work out, like faded text, etc…but I think we’re off to a good start!

  • http://pursuitofexcitement.wordpress.com James Shannon

Just brilliant … talk about an outside of the box approach to blogging!

  • http://www.candicedoestheworld.com Candice

    Thank you kindly, James!

  • http://www.beatravelbee.com Joya

I love this idea Candice! I still love writing in my journal, especially when I am traveling so I can take a break from technology. I can’t wait to see more posts.

  • http://www.candicedoestheworld.com Candice

    Thanks, Joya!

  • http://idrinkmyteasweet.com Abhijit

Great idea Candice! I still prefer writing in my travel journal compared to on a laptop! Call me old-fashioned, or call me in sync with the latest trend started by a website called CDTW! :D

  • http://www.candicedoestheworld.com Candice

Ugh, same here! I still even write all my to-do lists by hand. Something so satisfying about crossing off items on a list.

  • http://www.aladyinlondon.com/ A Lady in London

Great post. I agree that writing in the old fashioned way feels a lot more creative than using the Internet. I liked the way you incorporated your journal, too!

  • http://www.candicedoestheworld.com Candice

    Thanks lady!
