That Time a Dolphin Undressed me in Mexico

by Candice on January 27, 2012

This one time in Mexico, I was undressed by a dolphin.

That sounds worst than it is. I can only imagine what kind of Google results I’ll get for this post. DOLPHIN SEX!

During my first trip to the Yucatan with my ladies, I was able to be a little indulgent with my money. I had what some people like to call a “real job.” So the extravagant $200 price (including a photo CD) with Delphinus didn’t deter me, and I’m glad it didn’t. Plus that whole silly H1N1 thing was going on, and my friend Ashley and I were eager for a distraction.

Meet the dolphins.

I was a little nervous. Dolphins are cute and all, but damn, they big! We were given a safety brief and instructions, equipped with lifejackets, and introduced to these babies in the dolphin pool.

The whole thing took about 45 minutes, and the trainer instructed from her platform stretching across the pool. We were given techniques to make them sing, dance, spit water, and twirl in the water.

Lookin' a little out of sync there, Candice.

DANCE PUPPETS, DANCE!

Please don't fall on me.

The best part, however, was when the trainer instructed us to swim to the middle of the pool (one at a time), float flat on our stomachs with legs extended, and brace for the dolphins to push us through the water.

She warned that the force of water might push down our bathing suits.

I bravely volunteered to be the first, struck a pose in the middle of the pool, and braced myself. I was hardly prepared for the impact of flying through the water at 32989232 miles/hour. Down came my bikini bottoms while I struggled to keep my dignity intact.

My attractive face

Makes for a good picture though, right? Kinda like that time I kissed the Blarney Stone and smashed my head off the rock, perfectly timed with the photographer’s snapshot of me wincing in horror and pain.

God I miss Mexico.

True love.

*One of the reasons we went with Delphinus was because of their environmental campaigns and reputable breeding program. They come highly recommended!

I stayed at the Dreams Resort in Cancun, which had a dolphin pool right on the resort, but I never did the swimming with the dolphins. I thought it was too much money, and now of course I regret my choice. I should know it’s always better to spend a little extra for unique experiences. Although now I know that’s probably best not to wear a two-piece bathing suit if I decide to go swimming with the dolphins in the future.

It must be amazing swimming with the dolphins! It’s right up there on my list along with holding the cub of a big cat (tiger, lion et al), or a panda! :)

It was pretty awesome! Although now I wanna hold a baby big cat. Thanks for that.

Great story…we live pretty close to Discovery Cove where you can do the same sort of dolphin experience. Always have wanted to do it, but never have. Maybe I’ll have to change that soon…

It was a LOT of fun! And pretty educational, to boot.

Wow, that looked amazing. Dolphins are so cool. Great pictures. And yeah, “Dolphin Sex” is going to attract some pervs through Google. Good luck with that. LOL.

Great read – embarrassing moment and all, haha. Reminds me that I’m pretty sure my parents gifted me a print-out brochure for swimming with the dolphins, and I definitely never did it. Looks like a little parental IOU is on the menu! :)

I’d love to swim with dolphins one day – even at risk of losing my bottoms. I can see why you’d miss Mexico. Love, love the bottom photo of you.

Thanks, Leigh! Wish I could have had more time with them. They’re beautiful creatures

They’re incredibly intelligent creatures.
So… you know… seems like they’ve probably got a whole thing figured out there.

Note to self: Wear a 1 piece suit when I go swimming with dolphins. Good to know. :-)

I still dolphins are adorable, and I would so love to do this! Alas, I can’t swim and I’m terrified of water unless it comes in a bathtub or out of the shower, and the most I can do is read funny stories like this and dream about making dolphins dance.

Hahaha, you can watch from onshore?! I love the water…it might be the only thing I’m NOT afraid of.

That’s why I like one piece bathing suits! when I was wearing a two-piece in MX several years ago, the surf surprised me and washed my bikini top right off me!

Swimming with the dolphins is indeed fun! We did it in the Bahamas (hey … “it’s better in the Bahamas!”) and just loved it. One dolphin got really up close and personal with my hubby. They certainly can be friendly!

it still amuses me that we were basically in the same area of mexico at the same time months before we met… WHAT A TINY WORLD!
(and I considered the swimming with dolphins excursion. . . but I love sea turtles more. so I opted for swimming with sea turtles. for my birthday. it was the best birthday EVER.)
