My Map

Throughout my Internet explorations, I’ve come across many a trip or adventure I’d like to explore. Then, within a few days, the name of the place will slip my mind or I’ll completely lose some brilliant scheme I had dreamed up. Here’s some space for me to throw down ideas, plans, wishes, and more. A travel wish list, if you will.

They will be random. They will be a combination of booze, nature, shopping, cities, small towns, camping, disco dancing, musuem lurking, architecture, hostels, beaches, bars, nacho places, beautiful men and inspiration. Let’s do this.

Greece: Without a doubt my dream destination, fueled by years of studying Classics. Originally I had set my sights to solely the islands, but there’s too many amazing mainland attractions too (Corinth, Peloponnese, Meteora, etc.).

Alberta, Canada: Edmonton, Banff, Jasper and more.

The Cinque Terre: Inspired by images like these.

Ireland: To revisit the country that punched me in the face the first time, and to get outside Dublin and into the countryside.

Montreal, Quebec: I have yet to hear a bad thing about Montreal.

The Global Pub Crawl

How cool would it be to recruit people for an international pub crawl? If you haven’t figured out already, I’m big into the night scene. Here are some of the boozey places in the world I’d like to visit.

The Berlin Beer Bike: Probably the only time drinking and driving is acceptable.

Munich for Octoberfest: Why do all good things seem to happen in Germany?

Spam Jam and Aloha Festivals in Hawaii: Really, an entire event dedicated to Spam.

Edinburgh for Hogmanay: Because all my New Years celebrations have been less than epic. Pam and Cailin are my partners in crime for this one.

Hello Candace,
My name is Leigh McAdam, traveler, researcher and writer for http://www.hikebiketravel.com. I started off about 6 months ago with the idea of writing and selling downloadable guides and itineraries but on January 1st I changed my focus. The guides are now free (except for an email address) to download, and they will continue to be added at a rate of 1/month which gives me the excuse to travel regularly. I am also blogging and fine tuning the website – I finally joined the twitter crowd- please consider adding me @hikebiketravel.com. I added you a few days ago too.

You’re part of a group of the friendliest people on the planet. I spent a few weeks biking in Newfoundland where the legendary hospitality of Newfoundlanders was in ample supply. In fact one woman at a B&B gave us the keys to her car on a rainy night though she didn’t know us from a hole in the ground.

I love your writing style. You twenty somethings are a force to be reckoned with – and I mean that in a very good way.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Leigh

Leigh, probably one of the greatest comments I’ve received on my blog, thank you! I’m always pleased when I hear people enjoy their NL experience, feels personal somehow. So cool how you get to form those bonds with people on the road.

Just spent some time clicking around your site and I love it! Awesome guides. Will spend more time reading. If you ever make it back to NL, look me up. Really looking forward to a trip out west sometime int he near future. I added you to Twitter awhile ago I believe, feel free to be in touch any time! Thanks!

Your list will become larger and larger the more exploring you do on the internet and on the road. At that point, you may end up just putting a picture of a map and say you’ll do the whole thing.

Hahaha, totally. I already feel that way, I’ve covered a very small area so far.

I suggested that you do a cross-Canada-thing in your contest post.. but you should actually consider it. You could cross off Montreal, Edmonton and Jasper (and Banff with a rental car) all in one go. ViaRail prices drop like crazy in the winter, and a Canrailpass is like $530 or so. Which means you can go across the entire country and back for super cheap (although I guess you’d have to take a ferry or something from NFL?) but doooo it :]

Wow, after reading your about page and this one, I feel like we may be kindred travel spirits! A tad creepy, I know, but the places you listed (and the combination of things you look for in a trip) are definitely on my Canada/ Europe list! Although I’ve never heard of the spamfest in Hawaii, thats just hilarious.

I grew up just outside of Banff, AB in Canmore and have spent a lot of time in Edmonton (hello WEST EDMONTON MALL) and I highly recommend those! Now that I’ve read about your partying ways, I HAVE to suggest Pink Palace (again), Ios island, Amsterdam for Queens Day in April for your Global Booze Crawl.

Again great stuff, loving the blog so far! PS. Have you been to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin? Droool, thats enough to make me want to go brave the torrential downpour any day!

Candice Reply:

Thanks for the comments! Glad you found me. :D I DID go to the Guinness Storehouse, but was pretty sick at that point. Alberta is actually on my list for this summer, especially Edmonton and Calgary…lots of friends in those parts!

Bleh, sickness while traveling is the worst! Maybe I’ll bump into you at Stampede or something :P … try the bust loose stampede pubcrawl if you’re there (it starts at NOON, good times all around)!

Hi…I just emailed you but, I thought I’d give you a suggestion for your Global Pub Crawl. Queen’s Day in Amsterdam. April 30th every year. I “studied” abroad for a year in Amsterdam and took full advantage of this boozing, boating, free concert-ing, orange wearing debauchery and have been dying to experience it again ever since.

Candice Reply:

Thanks, Steph! I love that you put “studied” in quotation marks. ;) Can’t wait to go back to Amsterdam someday. BTW, I didn’t receive any emails from you!

I’m quite impressed by how short you’ve managed to keep your list, I’ve never bothered writing one because there’s just too many places I want to visit and so it would probably be never ending. One of the top ones though is also Oktoberfest though, I’m hoping to get there either this year, or (more likely) next year as it looks really fun and also will be a good opportunity to try out my German.

Hogmanay in Edinburgh is really fun though, I’d highly recommend it even if I didn’t actually go to the street party, but there’s always this year (hopefully anyway!)

Also another idea for a pub-crawl is going to London and doing the “Monopoly” pub crawl where you have to visit and drink at every single location from the classic monopoly board . My friends and I are planning to do this at some point once we have enough money (and manage to raise our tolerance as we’re currently mostly lightweights so probably wouldn’t even make it halfway)

[Reply]

Candice Reply:

Oh, it’s not short by any means, I just haven’t managed to wrap my head around everything I’d like to do! Haha. I’ve heard of the Monopoly pubcrawl, I’d LOVE to do that. Sounds…messy.
